Jubilation as UNIPORT Set to Confer Honorary Doctor of Science Degree on Wike at Next Convocation

The University of Port Harcourt has announced plans to confer an honorary Doctor of Science degree (DSc Honoris Causa) on Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), during its upcoming convocation ceremony scheduled for July 26, 2025.

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Owunari Georgewill, made the announcement on Wednesday, June 18, during the official presentation of the conferment letter to Mr Wike at his residence in Abuja. He noted that the award is part of the institution’s 50th anniversary celebrations and said the decision was approved by the university’s Senate in recognition of Wike’s service to the nation and contributions to the development of the university and Rivers State.

Professor Georgewill described the former governor as a distinguished alumnus whose legacy is visibly embedded within the university. “Your footprints are there for everybody to see in the university. We are proud to be associated with you, and the university is indeed very proud that you attended it,” he stated.

The conferment letter, dated June 10, was earlier conveyed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Gloria China. It highlighted Wike’s visionary leadership and accomplishments in governance. The letter confirmed the award would be presented at the university’s 23rd convocation.

Chairman of the Governing Council and Pro-Chancellor, Mao Ohuabunwa, also praised Wike’s long-standing support for the university, recalling his role in defending and developing the institution while serving in various public offices. He credited Wike for establishing the university’s Faculty of Law during his tenure as Minister of Education and for building a modern convocation arena during his time as governor.

That convocation arena, described as one of the best in West Africa, is scheduled for inauguration on July 25, a day before the official convocation ceremony.

In his response, Wike expressed gratitude to the university for the honour, acknowledging the foundational role it played in his career. “For me, it is the university that gave me everything. I am a proud alumnus,” he said, adding that he remains committed to supporting the institution. “If I am in a position to do more for my university, I will continue to do it,” he affirmed.

The honorary doctorate ceremony will form a key highlight of UNIPORT’s golden jubilee celebrations next month.
