Journalists Threaten to Boycott Anambra Government Activities
The Anambra State Correspondents’ Chapel, representing external journalists covering the state, has announced its intention to boycott activities organized by the Anambra State Government. This decision follows mounting frustrations over what the chapel describes as the nonchalant attitude of government officials towards the press.
In a statement signed by the chapel’s chairman, Chuks Ilozue, and secretary, Tochukwu Ifejika, the journalists outlined their grievances, citing a longstanding communication gap with the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Commissioner for Information Sir Paul Nwosu, and Press Secretary Christian Aburime.
“Despite several correspondences over the past two years, we have observed a serious lacuna in the relationship between the chapel and the government,” the statement read. The journalists highlighted numerous instances where their inquiries were ignored, requests for interviews went unanswered, and they were excluded from significant events.
This lack of access to information, the chapel claims, hampers their ability to report accurately on government activities and hold officials accountable. The correspondents also accused the government of displaying a general disdain for the media, which they argue is vital for ensuring transparency and providing a platform for citizen voices.
The chapel has called on the government to address these issues and foster a more constructive relationship with the media. They warned that if their grievances are not resolved, the boycott would extend to all government activities, including press conferences and official events.
The potential boycott has raised concerns among media stakeholders about a possible breakdown in communication between the government and the public.
