Jonathan 2027: Omokri Declines Comment, Cites ‘Unconditional Love’ for Ex-President

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has declined to comment on calls for ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to contest in the 2027 presidential election, saying his personal relationship with Jonathan prevents him from speaking on the matter.

Speaking on *Politics Today* on Channels Television, Omokri described his bond with the former president as one rooted in “unconditional love,” noting that he would not criticise or offer opinions about him on live television. He recalled Jonathan’s visit to his family in California, where the former leader spent ten days, as an example of the depth of their relationship.

Jonathan, who governed Nigeria between 2010 and 2015 after succeeding the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, has remained largely absent from partisan politics since losing the 2015 election to Muhammadu Buhari. Despite this, he has not resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In recent weeks, there has been mounting pressure on Jonathan to return to active politics, with some PDP leaders openly urging him to run for the presidency in 2027. Bauchi State Governor and chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, described Jonathan as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated politicians and suggested that he would be a strong candidate for the party’s ticket. He also hinted that former Anambra State governor Peter Obi could be considered if he chose to align with the PDP.

As the PDP continues its internal consultations ahead of 2027, Jonathan’s potential candidacy remains a subject of speculation, while Omokri has chosen to keep his views private out of loyalty to his former principal.
