John Dumelo Nominated as Deputy Minister for Agriculture
Ghanaian actor and politician John Dumelo has been nominated as the Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture by President John Mahama. The announcement was made on Wednesday by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the president’s acting spokesperson, through a post on X.
Dumelo’s nomination comes as part of a major cabinet reshuffle by President Mahama, which includes 12 other ministerial appointments. Among the newly appointed ministers are two women, Gizella Tettey-Agbotui and Rita Naa Odoley Sowah.
Currently serving as the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Dumelo has been actively involved in agriculture through his business, Melo Farm, where he invests in crop and livestock farming. His appointment as deputy minister aligns with his long-standing interest in the sector.
Before assuming office, Dumelo and the other nominees will undergo vetting by Ghana’s parliamentary appointment committee.
Dumelo first gained prominence in 1991 as a child actor in the film Baby Thief and has since built a successful career in the Ghanaian and Nigerian film industries. He has starred in several movies, including Away Bus, The Game, Black Men Rock, One Night in Vegas, The King is Mine, and Four Play. His contributions to the entertainment industry have earned him numerous accolades.
Beyond his acting and political career, Dumelo is also known for his philanthropic efforts. The University of Ghana recently honored him for his support of students.
His election as an MP in December 2024 was a major milestone in his political journey, following his unsuccessful bid for the same seat in 2020, when he lost to Lydia Alhassan.
