Japa: UK Unveils Ambitious Measures to Curb Immigration Surge Ahead of Crucial Election

In a bid to address escalating concerns over migration, the UK’s Conservative government, led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, has revealed a comprehensive set of measures targeting record levels of immigration. The announcement comes as the nation braces for a pivotal general election anticipated in the coming year.

Key highlights of the plan include raising the minimum salary threshold for skilled worker visas and restricting family dependents for overseas health and social care staff entering Britain. The Prime Minister’s office hails these proposals as “the biggest clampdown on legal migration ever,” emphasizing a commitment to reduce new arrivals.

Despite the government’s stance, critics argue that the measures could adversely impact the National Health Service (NHS), already grappling with staff shortages. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported a significant surge in net migration to Britain in 2022, prompting Interior Minister James Cleverly to unveil plans to curtail the influx by an estimated 300,000 individuals in the coming years.

Cleverly detailed the changes in parliament, specifying that skilled foreign workers seeking a UK visa must now earn £38,700, up from £26,200, aligning with the median full-time wage. While health and social care workers are exempt from the salary increase, they will be prevented from bringing family dependents.

Notably, NHS Providers and Care England expressed concerns about potential deterrents for care workers and the vital role immigrants play in sustaining the social care sector. Cleverly also announced an increase in the NHS surcharge paid by migrants by 66 percent, bringing it to £1,035.

The government plans to reform the “shortage occupation list,” addressing jobs for which British employers struggle to find sufficient workers. The Conservatives, elected in 2019 with promises to reduce net migration, face increasing pressure as migration numbers continued to rise post-Brexit.

In response to mounting pressure, Cleverly emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the issue, characterizing it as a “do or die” matter for the party. However, opposition party Labour accused the Conservatives of being in a “chaotic panic” over immigration, branding the announcement as an admission of years of failure.

As the UK grapples with immigration challenges, the government is concurrently addressing irregular arrivals crossing the Channel. Approximately 30,000 individuals have made the perilous journey this year. Efforts to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda faced legal setbacks, prompting Cleverly’s upcoming visit to Kigali to finalize a new treaty and the government’s consideration of “emergency legislation” to resume deportation flights by spring.

This announcement sets the stage for a contentious debate on immigration, which is expected to feature prominently in the upcoming general election, slated for no later than January 2025.
