Japa: UK Issues 430,000 Visas to Nigerians in 2024

The United Kingdom has granted over 430,000 visas to Nigerians seeking to study and relocate to the country within the first seven months of 2024. This significant statistic was disclosed by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, during a meeting with Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), in Abuja.

Dr. Montgomery’s visit comes amid concerns over the ongoing civil unrest in the UK. Despite the turmoil, the High Commissioner reassured the Nigerian government that the safety of Nigerian nationals remains a top priority. He emphasized that the UK continues to be a safe destination, noting the country’s commitment to security through the establishment of 60 special courts designed to address criminal activities linked to the unrest.

In the face of rising tensions, Montgomery also reported that around 400 individuals have been arrested for their involvement in the violence, with the UK government actively working to bring to justice those who have incited unrest through hate speech and online disinformation.

During the meeting, NiDCOM chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa confirmed that there have been no reports of Nigerian casualties in the UK. She stated that NiDCOM is maintaining close communication with the Nigerian High Commission in London and various diaspora groups, all of which have reported no incidents involving Nigerians.

Dabiri-Erewa praised the UK government for its swift response to the situation, particularly the arrests of those responsible for the violence. She urged Nigerians in the UK to remain vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, and follow travel advisories issued by Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
