“It’s an Assault on Democracy” – Organised Labour Condemns Tinubu’s Action in Rivers
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s recent intervention in Rivers State, describing it as a blatant assault on democracy and a violation of constitutional order.
In a joint statement signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC President Festus Osifo, the labour unions expressed alarm over what they called the “hasty and unconstitutional” declaration of a state of emergency in the state. They argued that the president’s action clearly contravenes Part II, Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and represents a dangerous overreach of Executive power.
Labour demanded an immediate reversal of the move, warning that such actions could undermine democratic governance, destabilise the economy, and harm the welfare of Nigerian workers. They described the suspension or removal of the governor, deputy governor, and the State House of Assembly as unlawful, stressing that it threatens the autonomy of subnational governments and sets a troubling precedent.
“The NLC and TUC unequivocally condemn Mr. President’s hasty and unconstitutional declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State,” the statement read. “Nigeria’s democracy must not be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency.”
