In a joint statement signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC President Festus Osifo, the labour unions expressed alarm over what they called the “hasty and unconstitutional” declaration of a state of emergency in the state. “The NLC and TUC unequivocally condemn Mr. President’s hasty and unconstitutional declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State,” the statement read. “Nigeria’s democracy must not be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency.”
