“It Just Makes Me Laugh” — Obasanjo on Rumors of Igbo Heritage

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo recently addressed longstanding rumors about his alleged Igbo heritage, expressing amusement over the speculation.

Speaking in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during a meeting with leaders from the Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association, Obasanjo was quoted as saying, “It just makes me laugh.” These rumors suggest that Obasanjo’s father hailed from Anambra State.

The meeting, which included leaders representing key markets in Lagos State, revolved around seeking Obasanjo’s support for the establishment of the Owerri Central Market in Imo State. According to Obasanjo, discussions about the market have persisted since Imo State’s creation. He expressed optimism about the market’s future, describing it as “substantial, the first of its kind.”

Obasanjo also lauded the involvement of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma in the project, committing his own support to ensure the market’s success. Emphasizing national unity, Obasanjo stated, “We all share ownership of this nation,” and recalled the solidarity among Nigeria’s major ethnic groups during the civil war.

Emeka Emmanuel, the spokesperson for the Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association, outlined the market’s potential to foster innovation and entrepreneurship, urging Obasanjo’s assistance in helping members secure loans for market spaces. Emmanuel underscored that Obasanjo’s backing could significantly reduce street vending and enhance economic opportunities for the Igbo community.
