“It Is Shocking Mr. President Sacked the Governor and Left His Minister” – Rivers Government
The Rivers State Government has voiced strong disapproval over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara from office while leaving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, untouched amid the ongoing political crisis in the state.
In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the state government described the development as unjust and deeply concerning. According to the commissioner, Governor Fubara has shown unwavering commitment to peace, constitutional governance, and the progress of Rivers State, even in the face of sustained political turmoil.
Since assuming office, the government said Fubara has focused on protecting lives and property while steering the state toward development. Johnson emphasized that despite provocations, the governor upheld democratic values and put the interests of the people above politics.
Following President Tinubu’s intervention to resolve the political crisis, the Rivers State Government implemented the terms of the agreement, including the reinstatement of former commissioners. It also promptly complied with the Supreme Court’s ruling as soon as the certified true copy was made available, reaffirming its commitment to due process and the rule of law.
However, Johnson lamented that lawmakers loyal to Wike have continued to undermine peace efforts, disrupting governance and fueling instability. He expressed shock that while Fubara has now been removed, Wike—widely seen as a central figure in the crisis—remains in office.
“It is shocking that Mr. President sacked the governor and left his minister, who is the principal actor,” Johnson said.
Despite the political tension, the Rivers State Government assured citizens that governance remains on track. Salaries are being paid, development projects are ongoing, and the state remains secure.
The government urged Rivers residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding during this period, stressing that it will continue to engage relevant institutions to uphold democratic principles and ensure the continued stability and progress of the state.
“We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” Johnson added.
The Rivers State Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of its citizens while navigating the unfolding political developments.
