“It is not Right but It is not a Crime” Ndume Defends Rendition of Tinubu’s Campaign Anthem During 2024 Budget Presentation
Ali Ndume, Chief Whip of the Senate, has staunchly defended the rendition of President Bola Tinubu’s campaign anthem, “On your mandate,” during the 2024 budget presentation at the National Assembly. Despite criticism, Ndume insists it is not a crime, emphasizing that Nigerians tend to focus on trivial matters.
During the budget presentation on Wednesday, as Tinubu addressed the joint session of the National Assembly, lawmakers rose to welcome him, accompanied by the playing of the campaign anthem created by Tinubu’s supporters during the 2023 presidential election campaign.
The rendition has sparked controversy, with many, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), condemning the use of the campaign anthem within the hallowed chambers of the National Assembly.
In an interview on Channels Television, Ndume brushed off the criticism, stating, “It is not right, but it is not a crime. Honestly, it is not a big deal. In this country, we usually pick on trivial things.” He pointed out that a similar display occurred when former President Muhammadu Buhari visited the National Assembly.
Highlighting the supposed authoritative leadership style of Tinubu, Ndume praised the realism of the budget presented, contrasting it with previous administrations. He expressed confidence that Tinubu’s hands-on approach would bring positive change, asserting, “I believe him. He can change things.”
Ndume also drew a comparison between Tinubu and Buhari, claiming that Tinubu’s more authoritative leadership style differs from Buhari’s, who, according to Ndume, did not effectively supervise those to whom he delegated responsibilities.
As the debate over the rendition continues, Ndume urges Nigerians to support President Tinubu and believes in the potential for positive transformation under his administration.
