Israeli Strike in Gaza Kills Five Al Jazeera Journalists
Five Al Jazeera journalists, including Anas al Sharif, were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza. Al Sharif had previously expressed fears of being targeted for assassination.
The other victims were Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) had recently raised serious concerns over al Sharif’s safety, accusing Israeli forces of running a smear campaign against him.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed carrying out the strike, labeling al Sharif a “terrorist” and claiming he led a Hamas cell responsible for attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers. Al Jazeera condemned the strike as a “targeted assassination” and called it a deliberate attack on press freedom.
In recent remarks, al Sharif spoke about living in constant fear, stating that his reporting exposed and damaged Israel’s image internationally. Since the 2023 conflict began, at least 186 journalists and media workers have died in Gaza, with foreign reporters largely barred from independent coverage.
The Hamas-controlled Gaza government denounced the killings as a “brutal and heinous war crime,” accusing Israel of deliberately targeting journalists near al Shifa Hospital to silence the truth.
Following al Sharif’s death, a message believed to be his “last will and testament” was shared on social media, urging people not to forget Gaza or his story. The 28-year-old mourned the fact he would never see his children grow up.
The CPJ also reported that al Sharif’s father was killed in an Israeli airstrike last December after the journalist had received threats demanding he cease his reporting. Israel shut down Al Jazeera’s television network in the country in May 2024.
