Iran: Trump Dismisses CNN Ceasefire Report, Claims Link to Nigerian ‘Fake News’ Site

United States President Donald Trump has rejected a report by CNN on the Iran–US ceasefire, alleging that the story was based on information traced to a Nigerian “fake news” website.

The dispute followed CNN’s publication of a statement attributed to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), which claimed that Tehran had recorded a decisive outcome in the conflict. The statement described the war as unlawful and asserted that Iran had compelled the United States to accept a 10-point plan.

Responding to the report, Trump said the statement aired by CNN was false and accused the network of relying on unverified information. He claimed the source of the report was linked to an unidentified Nigerian platform, which he described as a “fake news site,” but did not provide evidence or name the outlet.

“The alleged statement put out by CNN World News is a fraud,” Trump said, adding that the report was “immediately picked up” and presented as legitimate. He also called on the network to retract the story and indicated that authorities were examining whether the publication could amount to a legal violation.

Trump’s remarks have drawn attention to Nigeria’s media space, even though no local news organisation has been officially identified as the source of the disputed report. As of the time of filing this report, there has been no independent confirmation linking any Nigerian outlet to the statement cited by CNN.

Media analysts say the development reflects the broader challenge of verifying information during fast-moving international crises, where conflicting claims can spread rapidly across digital platforms without clear attribution. They also caution that attributing misinformation to a specific country without evidence risks undermining the credibility of legitimate media organisations operating within that environment.

Following the ceasefire announcement, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, issued a separate statement outlining Tehran’s position and acknowledging diplomatic engagement. He thanked Pakistan for its mediation efforts and said Iran would halt its defensive operations if attacks against the country ceased.

Araghchi also indicated that, for a limited period, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz could be coordinated under specific conditions. He said he was speaking on behalf of the SNSC, Iran’s top national security body.

Meanwhile, Tasnim News Agency published a similar statement attributed to the council, reiterating claims that Iran had achieved a significant victory in the conflict.

Despite Trump’s assertions, questions remain over the origin of the report cited by CNN, with no verified source identified.
