Insecurity: “We’re Prepared to Help If You Ask,” Amaechi Tells Tinubu
Rotimi Amaechi has sharply criticised the government’s response to Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, warning that the surge in killings, kidnappings, and terrorist attacks reflects a failure of leadership. The former minister condemned the abduction of 25 students in Kebbi, the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba in Borno, and the attack on a church in Kwara, describing the string of incidents as proof that the nation’s security structure is faltering.
Amaechi said recent attacks across Plateau, Kebbi, Borno, Kwara, and Kaduna show an emboldened network of criminal groups taking advantage of weak government action. He argued that the current approach has eroded public confidence and allowed terror groups to operate with increasing boldness.
He urged the administration to overhaul its security response, strengthen intelligence gathering, and adopt more decisive tactics to restore order. Addressing President Bola Tinubu directly, Amaechi said protecting lives and property remains the foremost duty of government and criticised what he described as slow and ineffective reactions to major incidents.
Amaechi also questioned the President’s travel priorities at a time of escalating violence, insisting that firm leadership is needed to reverse the country’s security decline. Despite his criticisms, he said he is willing to support efforts to improve national safety, noting that similar strategies proved effective during his tenure in Rivers State. He added that he and his team are ready to help if the government seeks their input.
