Inmate Allegedly Impregnated by Nigerian Correctional Officer Gives Birth to Baby Boy
A female inmate at the Potiskum Correctional Centre in Yobe State has delivered a baby boy after allegations that she was impregnated by a correctional officer.
The inmate, identified as Blessing Sunday, gave birth on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at the Potiskum Specialist Hospital, according to a source familiar with the development. Both mother and child are reported to be stable.
“Blessing Sunday has given birth to a baby boy today. She and the baby are in good condition,” the source said.
The case has drawn attention following allegations that a senior officer, Sani Saleh-Bodejo, linked to the facility, sexually assaulted the inmate. He is also accused of accessing the female section of the custodial centre during late hours and exploiting his position. Another inmate was reportedly affected in a separate incident.
Saleh-Bodejo, an Assistant Superintendent of the Nigerian Correctional Service, was previously identified as the yardmaster of the facility. Reports also suggest that some staff members may have facilitated access within the facility.
The Nigerian Correctional Service confirmed earlier disciplinary action, stating that the officer and others connected to the matter were suspended while investigations continue. The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board approved the decision after reviewing preliminary findings, according to a statement signed by spokesperson J. N. Osuji.
Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who heads the board overseeing the service, had directed that the case be investigated and assured that disciplinary measures would follow established procedures if wrongdoing is confirmed.
The service maintains that officers found guilty of misconduct, abuse of office, or violations involving inmates will face sanctions, including possible legal action.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are still ongoing.
