Inferno Ravages Nnewi Market, Goods Worth Millions Lost

A midnight inferno at Ahịa Mgbede, opposite the New Motor Spare Parts Market in Nnewi, Anambra State, has left goods worth millions of naira destroyed, plunging business owners into despair.

The fire, which erupted in the early hours of Tuesday, razed several shops, reducing goods and properties to ashes before firefighters could bring it under control. Witnesses reported that the fire raged for several minutes as shop owners and sympathizers desperately attempted to salvage valuables.

One affected trader, identified as Uche, described the devastation, saying, “We arrived this morning to find our shops reduced to rubble. The loss is immeasurable and has shocked the entire business community.” Uche also revealed that a distraught female victim, overwhelmed by the loss, attempted self-harm but was restrained by onlookers.

The Anambra State Fire Service confirmed the incident through a statement issued by the state fire chief, Chukwudi Chiketa. According to the statement, the distress call was received at 2:15 am, and firefighting teams from the Nnewi and Ogidi stations were dispatched immediately.

“Our firemen worked tirelessly to contain the fire, but it reignited later this morning. Efforts are ongoing to completely extinguish it,” the statement read.

No casualties were reported at the time of filing this report. The fire service urged the public to prioritize fire safety and report incidents promptly for timely intervention.

“Fire outbreaks are dangerous but preventable. Always exercise caution and call the Fire Service immediately when incidents occur,” the fire chief advised.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
