INEC Receives Recall Petition Against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from Kogi Central Constituents
A group of registered voters from Kogi Central Senatorial District has submitted a formal petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) seeking the recall of their representative at the National Assembly, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The petition, dated March 21, 2025, was delivered to INEC headquarters in Abuja on Monday, March 24, 2025, by the group identified as Concerned Kogi Youth and Women.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Charity Ijoshe Omole said constituents had lost confidence in Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, citing her suspension from the Senate and what they described as a lack of representation for Kogi Central. “We have lost confidence in her because of her gross misconduct that led to her suspension in the Senate,” Omole stated. “We cannot afford not to be represented. This petition is from Concerned Kogi Youth and Women. We, the people of Kogi Central, voted her in, and we are here to recall her.”
According to Omole, the petition has been signed by over 250,000 constituents, surpassing half of the district’s 488,000 registered voters. The petition, addressed to INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and titled *“Constituents Petition for the Recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on Grounds of Loss of Confidence,”* invokes provisions under Section 68 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall Petitions.
The petitioners claim that Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was declared the duly elected senator for Kogi Central by the Court of Appeal in October 2023, has exhibited gross misconduct, abused her office, and engaged in a pattern of deceitful behavior that has embarrassed both her constituents and the Nigerian Senate. They argue that these actions have damaged the credibility of democratic institutions and the reputation of Kogi Central.
They have formally requested that INEC begin the constitutional process of recalling Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and declare her seat vacant.
