INEC Insider Tips Likely Date for Anambra South Senate Election

A by-election to fill the vacant Anambra South Senatorial seat may take place as early as May, according to insider information from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Though no official date has been released, a senior INEC official in Awka, speaking anonymously, revealed that the vote is likely to be scheduled between May and June 2025.

The Senate seat has remained unoccupied since the passing of Senator Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah seven months ago, leaving the district without representation. While the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Anambra State, Queen Elizabeth Agwu, confirmed that the Senate has formally notified INEC of the vacancy, she noted that a date has not yet been communicated.

Despite the lack of a formal announcement, the INEC source stated that preparations are already underway. “The necessary funds have been allocated, and we’re ready to proceed once the date is fixed,” the source said, hinting that the election will likely take place before the November 8 gubernatorial polls.

Political parties and aspirants have been in limbo for months, unsure whether the senatorial and gubernatorial elections would collide. With at least 12 aspirants already vying for the Senate seat, the anticipated by-election date could soon inject fresh momentum into the race.

Attempts to reach REC Agwu for confirmation or comment were unsuccessful, as her phone remained unreachable at press time.
