#ImoDecides2023: Polls Marred by Alleged APC-Linked Electoral Material Hijacking

The Imo State gubernatorial election has been marred by allegations of electoral malpractice as Athan Achonu, the Labour Party governorship candidate, raised concerns over the reported hijacking and diversion of electoral materials in two local council areas. Achonu alleged that the materials were snatched by alleged thugs affiliated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement, Achonu claimed that electoral materials designated for the Orlu Local Government Area were diverted to a private residence. He specifically pointed fingers at thugs purportedly working for the APC, accusing them of orchestrating the diversion.

Highlighting the incidents, Achonu’s spokesperson, Chibuikem, mentioned that in Orlu, materials intended for seven wards were allegedly hijacked by APC members and redirected to the palace of the traditional ruler of Amaifeke community, Emmanuel Okeke.

Chibuikem’s statement echoed the disturbing reports coming from the electoral process, citing that materials for seven wards in Orlu were rerouted to the Palace of Eze Imo, who also holds the title of Eze of Amaifeke. Additionally, Achonu’s camp alleged that in Okigwe, electoral containers were centralized at the stadium, but the materials were moved exclusively to the local government secretariat, allowing entry only for APC representatives.

Contrarily, the APC’s state spokesperson, Cajetan Duke, refuted the allegations, denying any involvement or association with the reported electoral material diversion.

The accusations and denials underscore the tense atmosphere surrounding the Imo State elections, raising concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. The situation demands investigation and swift resolution to ensure a fair and transparent electoral outcome.
