Imo Village in Shock as Armed Herders Kill Vigilante Leader, Others Missing
Suspected armed herders attacked Amakohia-Ubi community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State on Wednesday evening, killing a vigilante leader and leaving several others missing or injured. The incident, which occurred around 6:30 pm, caused widespread panic, prompting residents to flee to neighboring communities for safety.
The slain vigilante leader, Monday Nwaozuzu, also known as Ojo Ola, was reportedly killed while confronting the herders. At least three members of the community vigilante group were caught up in the clash, with some still missing or wounded.
Residents said the confrontation began when the vigilantes tried to prevent herders and their cattle from entering farmlands near the community college axis. According to witnesses, the herders were fully armed and opened fire during the standoff.
Suspicion of abduction arose after one of the missing vigilantes’ phone numbers was reportedly answered by a suspected herder the following morning. Villagers said it remains unclear whether those missing have been killed or kidnapped.
Security operatives reportedly visited the community to assess the situation, and the body of the deceased vigilante leader has been deposited in a morgue. The Imo State Police Command had not responded to inquiries as of press time.
Residents remain on edge, with many continuing to flee their homes, fearing further attacks.
