Imo Governor Hope Uzodinma Appoints Himself Commissioner for Lands

In a move aimed at combating corruption within Imo State’s land ministry, Governor Hope Uzodinma has appointed himself as the commissioner for land, survey, and physical planning.

Oguike Nwachukwu, the governor’s chief press secretary, revealed the self-appointment during an interview with TheCable. Nwachukwu explained that Uzodinma’s decision is driven by the need to purge the ministry of “criminal-minded fellows” who have tarnished the government’s reputation.

“The office of the governor will play a supervisory role over the land ministry for now, to rid the place of certain developments by some criminal-minded fellows that have portrayed the government in a bad light,” Nwachukwu said.

The move comes after a series of changes within the land ministry. Enyinnaya Onuegbu was initially appointed as commissioner for lands but was replaced by Noble Atulegwu, who was previously the commissioner for skills and entrepreneurial affairs. However, in November 2023, Governor Uzodinma suspended Atulegwu from the cabinet.

Governor Uzodinma’s new role is intended to restore order and trust in the land ministry. According to Nwachukwu, the governor’s self-appointment will help ensure proper monitoring and management of the ministry, contributing to the state’s efforts to combat corruption.

The governor’s office has indicated that this appointment could last for an indefinite period, depending on how well the ministry is managed under Uzodinma’s direct supervision. This decision has garnered support from many Imo citizens who believe the governor is capable of effectively addressing the issues plaguing the land ministry.
