Imo Government Sets July 24 Deadline for Cattle Herders to Leave Owerri

The Imo State Government has issued a directive requiring all cattle herders to cease open grazing within Owerri, the state capital, by July 24, 2025. The announcement was made during a meeting between government officials and representatives of the cattle herders’ community in the city.

Commissioner for Livestock Development, Anthony Mgbeahurike, who addressed the gathering, stated that the decision aims to restore public order and ensure peaceful coexistence in the capital territory. He emphasized that Governor Hope Uzodinma remains committed to promoting harmony among all residents, regardless of ethnic or religious backgrounds.

Mgbeahurike highlighted the government’s ongoing support for the herding community, including the provision of free anthrax vaccinations for cattle. However, he noted that recent unchecked grazing practices have disrupted daily life for many citizens in the capital, impacting both social and economic activities.

He urged herders to respect the rights of local farmers by avoiding damage to crops and compensating for any losses when necessary. Addressing the newly appointed leader of the cattle herders in the state, Alhaji Shuaibu, the commissioner encouraged him to communicate the new policy clearly to his members.

In response, Alhaji Shuaibu apologized for past violations of grazing laws and pledged full compliance with the new directive. He described Governor Uzodinma’s administration as inclusive and promised that the herders would support efforts to maintain a peaceful and orderly Imo State.
