I’m Pleased Many Nigerians Have Returned to Farming – Buhari
Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed concern over Nigeria’s uncontrolled population growth, calling it a significant issue that requires urgent attention. Despite this, Buhari voiced his satisfaction that many Nigerians are returning to farming, which he believes will help reduce food prices across the country.
Speaking to journalists after joining the Emir of Daura, Dr. Faruk Umar Faruk, for the Eid prayer at the township Eid ground on Sunday, Buhari emphasized the need for more dialogue and awareness regarding population growth. He also highlighted the importance of investing in education and health.
In his Eid-el-Kabir message, the former President wished all Nigerians a happy celebration, praying for joy, prosperity, and good health for everyone. He also urged citizens to make Nigeria self-reliant by growing their own food. “We have shown that we can do it. This is not the time to relent when we see prices going up. Let us buy what is produced in the country,” Buhari said.
Buhari praised the efforts of previous governments in laying the foundation for a prosperous and stable Nigeria. He encouraged the youth to continue playing an active role in nation-building and to seek inspiration from the nation’s founding fathers and regional leaders.
Reflecting on the large crowds at the Eid in Daura, Buhari reiterated his concern about unchecked population growth, warning that it could lead to significant problems for future generations. He called for increased investment in education and health to address this issue.
Buhari also emphasized the importance of helping one another, especially during the festive season, urging Nigerians to be their brothers’ keepers.
Addressing members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who traditionally visit him every Sallah, Buhari lauded the scheme as a vital unifying force in Nigeria. He urged future administrations to continue strengthening the NYSC, describing it as one of the greatest achievements of General Yakubu Gowon’s tenure as Head of State.
