“I’m Looking for a Home and a Wife in Nigeria” — Busta Rhymes
American rapper and record producer Trevor Smith, popularly known as Busta Rhymes, has said he is considering settling down in Nigeria, including buying property and eventually marrying a Nigerian woman.
The Grammy-nominated artiste made the remarks while performing at the Ilubirin Music Festival on Saturday in Lagos, where he spoke directly to the crowd about his personal plans for the future. According to him, the visit marked more than a performance, describing it as a meaningful return that stirred a sense of belonging.
Busta Rhymes noted that the Lagos show was his first visit to Nigeria since 2010, when he headlined the Star Mega Jam concert in Abuja. Addressing the audience during a pause in his set, he said being back in the country made him feel at home and prompted deeper reflection about his roots.
The rapper explained that the trip was tied to long-term goals beyond music. He revealed that he is looking to own a home in Nigeria and is open to getting married and raising a family in the country when he eventually slows down his career.
“Even though it took 15 years, we are home,” he said. “This trip was memorable to me because it wasn’t just about a show. I’m looking for a home here, I’m looking for property. I’m thinking about looking for a wife so that when I stop working, I can settle down here.”
Busta Rhymes, who has been a Muslim since the age of 12, has six children—three sons and three daughters—with four different women, including his former partner Joanne Wood. Despite this, he has never been married.
Speaking on the atmosphere surrounding the popular Detty December festivities, the 53-year-old rapper said he felt the collective energy of the moment and believed it was the right time to share his intentions with the audience.
Busta Rhymes is widely known for his rapid-fire delivery and energetic performances, with hit songs such as Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check, Break Ya Neck, and Touch It. He has received multiple Grammy Award nominations and remains one of the most influential figures in global hip-hop.
