“I’ll Say What I Know When the Time Comes,” Kyari Warns Amid Petrol Smuggling Crisis
The Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has voiced concerns over the detrimental effects of smuggling on Nigeria’s oil sector. Addressing a Senate ad hoc committee on alleged economic sabotage within the petroleum industry, Kyari hinted at holding crucial information that he will disclose at the appropriate time.
Speaking in Abuja before the committee, chaired by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Kyari acknowledged the reality of smuggling across the country’s borders. “We all know what happens; smuggling does take place… No one can deny that smuggling takes place across our borders both for PMS and any other commodities that you can think of. This is real. Mr Chairman, when the details come, we will tell you what we know,” he stated.
Kyari also addressed accusations aimed at NNPCL regarding the importation of substandard petroleum products, stressing that the company’s personnel are not involved in such activities. He lamented the wave of media attacks suggesting that NNPCL is undermining Nigeria’s economy, asserting that the company remains committed to transparency and integrity. “NNPCL is faithful and will not lie to the country,” Kyari declared.
Furthermore, Kyari painted a grim picture of the current state of the oil and gas industry, describing it as “bleeding.” While withholding specific details, he promised to reveal more information when the time is right.
In a call for greater transparency, Kyari recommended that future committee sessions be broadcast live, allowing Nigerians to follow the proceedings closely.
