Ikwerre Group Blasts Ohaneze Ndigbo: Insisting We’re Igbos is Offensive, Insulting

In a resolute stance against what they deem as false claims, the Ikwerre socio-cultural group, represented by the Iwhnurohna Progressive Organisation (IPO), has vehemently rejected assertions made by Ohaneze Ndigbo and its President, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, suggesting that Ikwerre is part of the Igbo ethnic group.

Following a meeting in Port Harcourt, Dr. Okahchukwu Dibia, the spokesperson for IPO, expressed deep dismay at the remarks attributed to Iwuanyanwu, labeling them as “offensive, insulting, shameful, disgusting, insensitive, careless, and uncivilized.”

Dibia emphasized the distinct identity of the Ikwerre people, highlighting their recognition both within Nigeria and by the United Nations. He pointed out that while there may be linguistic similarities, Ikwerre’s history, culture, and ancestry remain separate from that of the Igbo.

Drawing on scholarly works and historical evidence, Dibia refuted claims of ethnic affiliation, stressing that physical attributes or cultural practices should not determine one’s identity. He urged for a focus on verifiable historical facts and innate characteristics rather than superficial similarities.

Moreover, Dibia addressed the historical context, emphasizing that Ikwerre’s formation as a distinct ethnic nation predates any notions of Igbo affiliation. He dismissed the idea of Ikwerre being subsumed under Igbo identity due to the presence of Aro communities in the region.

In a direct message to Ohaneze Ndigbo, Dibia called for mutual respect and good neighborliness, urging the organization to refrain from inflammatory statements that could strain relations between Ikwerre and Igbo communities. He emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating ethnic diversity rather than seeking forced assimilation.

In conclusion, Dibia invoked the memory of Late Chief Eguma, who, despite his brief association with Ohaneze Ndigbo, ultimately acknowledged his mistake and sought reconciliation with the Ikwerre community. He urged Ohaneze to follow suit and foster harmonious coexistence among all ethnic groups in Nigeria.
