Igwe Achebe Condemns State Government’s Handling of Monarch’s Suspension, Stands Firm in Defense of Ifeanyi Ubah

The Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council (ANSTC) has officially responded to the recent suspension of HRH Igwe Damian O. Ezeani by the Anambra state government. In a press release issued by the Chairman of the council, His Royal Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka A. Achebe CFR, mni, concerns were raised about the handling of Igwe Damian O. Ezeani’s suspension.

In a 14-point letter, Igwe Achebe questioned the timing of the suspension, noting its prior circulation on social media for over 24 hours before the official letter reached the council. Expressing dismay, he highlighted that the suspension letter was copied to law enforcement agencies but not to the Chairman of the ASTRC.

Igwe Achebe underscored the significance of the traditional institution and criticized the lack of involvement or reference to the ASTRC in the application of the code of conduct. He recalled his communication with the governor on October 4, 2023, regarding the code’s review for increased efficacy, expressing disappointment at the lack of feedback.

The Chairman also criticized the Commissioner’s discussion on January 7, 2024, about traditional rulers conferring honorary titles in violation of the code. Notably, he pointed out the absence of written directives from the ministry before January 8, 2024, when Igwe Neni was suspended.

Igwe Achebe expressed concern about the Commissioner’s letter to Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, defending the Senator’s qualifications and contributions while highlighting potential underlying issues. He concluded by asserting that the state government’s actions represent the progressive dehumanization of Anambra’s traditional institution and urged reconsideration.

This development comes amid related issues involving other Igwes, chieftaincy titles, and growing discontent within the state. The ANSTC’s strong stance underscores the need for a comprehensive review of the state government’s approach to traditional institutions, emphasizing their significance at both federal and state levels.
