IG Orders Probe of KWAM 1 Airport Incident, Senate Demands Justice for Ibom Air Passenger
The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has ordered an investigation into an incident involving Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. On August 5, KWAM 1 was stopped from boarding a Value Jet flight because he was carrying a bottle of liquid he claimed was water. His refusal to comply reportedly disrupted the safe operation of the aircraft, violating Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations. KWAM 1 later issued an apology. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) petitioned the police, prompting the IG to direct the Airport Command to investigate the matter thoroughly. Meanwhile, the pilot and co-pilot of the Value Jet flight had their licenses suspended pending the investigation’s outcome.
In a separate incident, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, an Ibom Air passenger, remains in Kirikiri Correctional Centre following her arraignment for allegedly assaulting a cabin crew member. Emmanson was remanded after failing to provide adequate sureties. A warrant mix-up delayed her release, but Senior Advocate of Nigeria Dr. Doyin Awolaye has confirmed he will represent her. The Senate Committee on Aviation has pledged to investigate recent airline passenger incidents, citing concerns over passenger rights, operational standards, and discipline within Nigeria’s aviation sector. Senator Buhari Abdulfatai emphasized the need for coordinated action to restore public confidence and ensure accountability.
The Nigerian Bar Association condemned Ibom Air’s treatment of Ms. Emmanson, describing the airline’s lifetime flight ban without a fair hearing as unlawful and a violation of her dignity. The NBA condemned the public exposure and humiliation Ms. Emmanson suffered after being forcibly removed from the aircraft, calling for an independent investigation and prosecution of those responsible for circulating footage of the incident. The NBA also demanded that Ibom Air withdraw the ban and issue a public apology.
Similarly, the Lagos branch of the African Women Lawyers Association expressed outrage over the forced removal and public humiliation of Ms. Emmanson. The group called for suspension and sanctions against all involved crew and security personnel pending investigation and demanded compensation and an apology for the victim.
In response to the controversies, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mike Achimugu, clarified the agency’s role, stating that NCAA intervenes only within its mandate. He explained that the airline did not press charges against KWAM 1, which led the NCAA to petition for prosecution and advise a flight ban. Conversely, Ibom Air immediately pursued legal action against Ms. Emmanson following the alleged assault on their staff. Achimugu rejected claims of double standards between the two cases.
Ms. Emmanson faces charges including disorderly conduct, assault on two crew members, and willful damage to airline property. These charges relate to alleged incidents on August 10 aboard an Ibom Air flight at Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja. The police cited violations of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria bye-laws and the Criminal Law of Lagos State in the charges against her.
