“If Tinubu Isn’t Doing Well, Suggest a Man in Your Family” — Remi Surutu Backs President’s 2027 Re-election
Veteran Yoruba actress Remi Surutu has declared support for the re-election of Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.
Surutu made the statement during the launch of EKO57, a political support group created to mobilise support for the president’s second-term bid. The event, held in Lagos on Sunday, was attended by several actors including Yomi Fash-Lanso and Adams Kehinde.
Speaking at the event, Surutu said she was not worried about public criticism over her decision to campaign for the president. She noted that she had supported Tinubu since his tenure as governor of Lagos State and had faced backlash online over her political stance.
She recalled that she was criticised ahead of the 2023 election but insisted it did not affect her decision to vote.
“A day before the election in 2023, people told me it was the same Asiwaju I was following who killed my child. But I didn’t care. I still went out the next day to vote. Your vote is your right. Don’t let anyone deceive you or scare you,” she said.
The actress maintained that critics of the president should present alternatives instead of attacking him.
“If you think he has not done well, suggest a man in your family. Let that person come and govern for just one day. Then you will know what is going on,” she said.
Surutu also argued that many of the challenges facing Nigeria are partly caused by the actions of citizens themselves. According to her, people often damage public infrastructure and later blame the government.
“We Nigerians destroy things ourselves and make them look ugly, then when you come back you say it is the government. We are the ones doing it ourselves,” she said, adding that the president has handled several national issues behind the scenes.
She reaffirmed her loyalty to the All Progressives Congress, saying she has been a member for years and has no intention of leaving the ruling party.
Actor Yomi Fash-Lanso also expressed support for the president during the event, stating that he backed Tinubu because of his political record. He said he mobilised support for the president ahead of the 2023 election and joined the EKO57 initiative to continue that effort.
Fash-Lanso criticised those blaming the president for rising petrol prices and other economic challenges, arguing that many of the country’s problems existed before the current administration.
The endorsements come at a time when opinions among Yoruba actors remain divided over the performance of the All Progressives Congress government. While some have expressed disappointment with the party, others continue to publicly support Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.
