Ibadan Broadcaster Summoned by INTERPOL Over Alleged Defamation
The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) has summoned Ibadan-based broadcaster Peter Olasupo over allegations of criminal defamation and cyberstalking. Olasupo is expected to appear at INTERPOL’s headquarters in Abuja on January 13, 2025.
The broadcaster disclosed the development in a statement posted on his Facebook page, which was later confirmed by newsmen. According to the statement, Olasupo received an invitation letter on December 30, 2024, instructing him to report to the INTERPOL office at Force Headquarters, Shehu Shagari Way, Garki, Abuja, for further investigation.
Olasupo revealed that his employer contacted a lawyer immediately upon receiving the letter. The legal intervention led to a rescheduling of his appearance, which was originally set for December 30, 2024.
In his statement, Olasupo expressed confusion and concern about the situation, questioning the reasons behind the summons and the choice of INTERPOL as the investigating body. “Who reported me to INTERPOL? Why INTERPOL? Who is defaming who? And who is cyberstalking who? My Lord, I am innocent of these allegations,” he said.
He also raised logistical concerns about traveling to Abuja for the investigation, suggesting that appearances at closer locations, such as the Oyo State Police Command in Ibadan or the Lagos office, would have been more convenient. Olasupo humorously queried whether INTERPOL would cover travel expenses or provide a helicopter for the journey, given the current high cost of air travel and risks associated with road trips.
Despite these challenges, Olasupo assured his audience that he would cooperate fully with the investigation and maintain his professionalism. He reiterated his commitment to truth and ethical journalism, pledging that the matter would not deter him from speaking truth to power.
When contacted for confirmation, Olasupo affirmed the authenticity of his statement, saying, “Good evening Sir. Yes, it’s true oo.”
As of now, the details surrounding the allegations remain unclear, and Olasupo has stated that he will seek further clarification during his scheduled appearance.
