“I was bundled to the police station,” says Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseye after being assaulted by lawmaker
Stephen Abuwatseye, the Bolt driver allegedly assaulted by lawmaker Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, has recounted his experience of being forcibly taken to a police station by officers following the incident. Abuwatseye stated that after a video of the altercation went viral, Ikwechegh contacted the police, leading to his detention.
Speaking in a video shared circulating online, Abuwatseye detailed how the police twisted the narrative, accusing him of instigating a fight with the lawmaker. “After the video circulated, he called some police officers. They bundled me into their vehicle despite my intention to drive my own car,” he explained.
Abuwatseye described being sandwiched between two officers as they transported him to the station. Upon arrival, he was instructed to enter while receiving multiple phone calls, which the officers forbade him from answering. He reported that the police spoke to witnesses rather than directly questioning him, quickly claiming he had confronted Ikwechegh at his residence.
During the investigation, Abuwatseye felt compelled to explain his decision to record the encounter, emphasizing that he was merely documenting what he perceived as a threat. Despite his efforts to clarify the situation, he was left waiting in a police vehicle for over two hours while the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) visited the lawmaker’s house.
Upon the IPO’s return, Abuwatseye faced further accusations from Ikwechegh, who arrived at the station, shouting and disparaging him. “He called me a poor man and accused me of being prideful,” Abuwatseye recalled. He stated he left the police station shortly after 3 PM, while Ikwechegh was not detained and his vehicle remained at the station.
Abuwatseye also recounted the events leading to the confrontation, detailing a request he received from Bolt just before closing for the night. He described a delivery involving a package of snails, stating that he attempted to communicate professionally with the recipient. However, the situation escalated when the man responded aggressively over the phone.
