“I Requested Her Phone to Snap Myself, She Refused, I Strangled Her” – Man Confesses to Killing Girlfriend on His Birthday
A 32-year-old man, Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson, has confessed to killing his girlfriend, Emem Monday Effanga, 39, after she refused to let him use her phone to take birthday photos.
Nelson was arrested by operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command in a church in Uyo while attempting to evade capture. According to the police, the suspect visited Effanga at her apartment on February 6, 2025, the morning of his birthday. During an interrogation, he admitted that he asked to use her phone to snap pictures for social media. When she refused, he became enraged, overpowered her, and strangled her. He also confessed to hitting her head on the floor before fleeing the scene with the phone.
Police spokesperson DSP Timfon John confirmed the arrest and disclosed that the deceased was found with visible marks of violence on her face and neck, suggesting she had been beaten and strangled. The scene was processed, and the body was taken to the hospital, where her death was confirmed by medical personnel. A post-mortem examination was later conducted to establish the cause of death.
The police recovered an Itel Super Phone belonging to the deceased from Nelson at the time of his arrest. He is currently in custody and will be charged to court.
