“I Removed Fuel Subsidy to Protect Unborn Generation” — Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has said his decision to remove fuel subsidy was a strategic move aimed at safeguarding the future of Nigeria’s unborn generations. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized that his administration’s policies are rooted in ensuring long-term prosperity and stability for the country.
Reaffirming his commitment to youth empowerment, the President described young Nigerians as the heartbeat of the nation and the foundation on which the future rests. “Everything hangs on your future,” he told the committee. “Every decision I’ve taken is all about tomorrow. When you remove oil subsidy, you’re protecting the future of generations yet unborn.”
He argued that investment in infrastructure and youth empowerment is crucial in curbing the emigration of skilled Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad. “If you grow prosperity back home and empower people, they will not bother to leave. They will stay home. This is your home—to develop, build and make prosper,” he said.
Reflecting on the early days of his administration, Tinubu acknowledged the initial economic difficulties, saying, “It looked so foggy, dicey and hopeless. We tried hard and we were fetching water from a dry well, but today, the economy has turned the corner. Prices are falling, confidence in our economy is improving, investors are looking in, technology is advancing.”
He urged the committee to take their responsibility seriously, assuring them of his support and openness to constructive dialogue. “Tell me whatever you think is wrong and the way you want things done. We’ll try to implement all of it as long as it is for the prosperity of this country.”
Officially inaugurating the committee, Tinubu expressed optimism about the outcomes of the youth confab and encouraged the use of technology and innovation to address challenges, particularly in agriculture and food security. “Let’s work for food sovereignty of this country. I like you. I can’t be youth again, maybe in the next life. I’m envious of all of you,” he added with a smile.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, also spoke at the event, highlighting that the youth conference is intended to deepen engagement with young Nigerians. He described Tinubu’s administration as a listening government, committed to incorporating the voices and contributions of the youth in policymaking.
Olawande noted that the planning committee includes representatives from key federal ministries, civil society, non-governmental organisations, and international partners like the World Bank. Their task, he said, is to organise a conference that will meaningfully impact the lives of Nigerian youths.
Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa and a member of the planning committee, praised President Tinubu for recognising the importance of youth participation in national development.
