“I Regret That We Were Not More Outspoken”: Zuckerberg Admits to Censoring Biden Corruption Story Under Government Pressure
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that Facebook censored a story about alleged corruption involving President Joe Biden’s family following pressure from the White House and the FBI. In a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan, Zuckerberg acknowledged that Facebook “demoted” the story in response to FBI warnings about potential Russian disinformation.
Zuckerberg admitted that, upon review, the story was not disinformation and expressed regret over the decision. He noted that Facebook has since revised its policies to prevent similar situations, including ceasing the practice of demoting content while awaiting fact-checker reviews.
Additionally, Zuckerberg addressed past pressures from the Biden Administration concerning COVID-19 content, stating that officials pressured Facebook to censor various content related to the pandemic. He admitted that while the final decisions were made by Facebook, the company faced significant pressure from government officials.
The Meta chief expressed regret over the lack of vocal opposition to these pressures and affirmed a commitment to resisting undue influence in the future. Zuckerberg also announced he would not be contributing to election infrastructure funding this year to maintain neutrality.
The White House and FBI have not yet responded to Zuckerberg’s statements.
