“I Refused to Pay Her Bride Price Because She Is Not a Virgin” – Man Tells Court

A man, Kasali, has petitioned for divorce at the Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, citing irreconcilable differences with his wife, Ajoke. The court, presided over by Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, has adjourned the case after Ajoke failed to appear despite being served with court summonses.

Kasali told the court that he and Ajoke never had a traditional wedding, as she moved into his house shortly after they met. He admitted to refusing to pay her bride price, stating, **“I refused to pay her bride price when her parents insisted on having it because she is not a virgin.”**

He argued that their relationship was marked by misunderstandings, frequent arguments, and a lack of meaningful communication. According to him, they constantly fought and could not agree on anything.

Kasali further alleged that Ajoke had started dating another man, reinforcing his decision to formally end the marriage. “I heaved a sigh of relief the day she moved out of my house,” he told the court.

The case has been adjourned as the court awaits Ajoke’s response.
