“I Landed in Jail Because I Refused to Keep Quiet” – Obasanjo
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed that his refusal to remain silent on critical national and international issues led to his imprisonment during the military regime of General Sani Abacha. Obasanjo, who was accused of involvement in a phantom coup against the military dictator in 1995, was tried, convicted, and sentenced by a military tribunal.
Speaking during an interactive session with 15 young African leaders at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) over the weekend, the elder statesman recounted his ordeal. He described his time in prison as a major challenge that arose because of his determination to speak out against injustice and misgovernance.
Reflecting on his journey, Obasanjo shared that he had settled into agriculture after retiring from the military at age 42. However, his vocal stance on national issues led to his arrest and imprisonment. Upon his release, he said the country’s worsening state compelled him to seek the presidency in 1999.
He encouraged the youth to take up positive leadership roles, emphasizing the importance of standing for the truth and contributing to Africa’s progress. Addressing the continent’s debt crisis, Obasanjo criticized the recklessness and corruption that have fueled unsustainable borrowing, citing instances of mismanaged funds in Nigeria.
The event was part of the Future Africa Leaders Foundation’s initiative, featuring winners of the prestigious Future Africa Leaders Awards. Obasanjo commended the foundation’s founder, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, for inspiring and nurturing the next generation of African leaders.
Julian Ariori from Benin Republic, the Star Prize winner of the 2024 awards, thanked Obasanjo for hosting the group, noting that the experience at the Presidential Library provided valuable insights and inspiration. Participants from countries including Libya, Kenya, South Sudan, Morocco, and Rwanda joined the session, accompanied by Pastor Sylvester Ebhodaghe, Head of Media and Government Relations for the foundation.
