“I Have No Regrets Removing Fuel Subsidy” – Tinubu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his decision to remove the fuel subsidy, declaring that he holds no regrets over the move. Speaking during his first presidential media chat since assuming office, Tinubu stressed that subsidizing fuel was economically unsustainable, particularly given its far-reaching impact on the West African region.
“We can’t be subsidizing the entire West Africa sub-region. Either we slice it in half or bits, we still have to completely remove it,” the President stated, justifying the controversial decision.
Tinubu also highlighted improvements in security, noting progress in making previously unsafe travel routes viable again. “Two decades of wanton killings have been addressed. Today, you can travel the roads. Before now, it was impossible,” he said, adding that the military remains vigilant against threats to safeguard citizens.
On fiscal policies, Tinubu underscored efforts to transition from the “ways and means” model to a system of financial discipline and control. “We have more revenue being generated and distributed,” he stated.
He further celebrated the autonomy granted to local governments, linking it to his longstanding commitment to grassroots empowerment. Drawing from his tenure as Lagos State Governor, Tinubu referenced past disputes with the Obasanjo administration over the creation of additional local councils.
The President acknowledged ongoing challenges but expressed optimism about Nigeria’s progress. “Regardless of critics, Nigeria is on the path of recovery. We can’t finish the job in one calendar year, and I am not giving myself an excuse—it’s only been 18 months,” he remarked.
Tinubu’s comments reflect his administration’s focus on economic reforms and national security as part of efforts to ensure Nigeria’s long-term recovery.
