“I Cannot Be Intimidated” – Damagum Tells Edwin Clark
Umar Damagum, the acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged Edwin Clark, the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), to maintain a neutral stance in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. Damagum made these remarks on Wednesday in Abuja, addressing a recent letter from Clark that criticized his handling of the situation.
In the letter, Clark had expressed concerns over the influence of Nyesom Wike, the minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), on the PDP’s leadership. He suggested that Wike’s continued involvement in the party could be detrimental to its survival and accused Damagum of being manipulated by Wike to undermine the government of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Clark’s letter also referenced Wike’s alleged admission of engaging in activities aimed at destabilizing Fubara’s administration, citing Wike’s remarks during a recent event in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area.
In response, Damagum, while inaugurating the reconciliation and disciplinary committees at the PDP headquarters, emphasized his commitment to his role and dismissed any calls for his resignation. He stressed that he would not be intimidated by the criticisms and that his prominence would only grow in the face of such challenges.
Damagum also reflected on the responsibilities of elder statesmen like Clark, suggesting that they should focus on being impartial and guiding the nation rather than engaging in public disputes.
“He has all it takes to do the needful, not by taking a sentimental approach to the situation,” Damagum stated, adding that he intends to remain respectful and not dwell further on the matter.
