“I Am Not Among Governors Who Can’t Pay N62,000 Minimum Wage” – Kebbi State Governor Idris

Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has distanced himself from fellow governors who have expressed doubts about their ability to pay a proposed minimum wage of N62,000, even if the federal government and the Nigeria Labour Congress reach an agreement on the amount.

In a morning interview with the BBC, Governor Idris stated he was unaware of any meeting where such a stance was taken. As a member of the negotiating committee, he emphasized his commitment to mediating between the federal government and organized labour on the minimum wage issue.

“I was not part of any meeting where such a decision was made, and I will not be among those who refuse to pay the agreed minimum wage,” Idris asserted. “I have consistently stated in various public forums that I will pay the agreed amount, and I stand by that.”

Governor Idris, a former unionist, reaffirmed his dedication to advocating for workers’ welfare and better pay. He assured that he would continue to negotiate in favor of Nigerian workers as a member of the tripartite committee.

He urged both the federal government and organized labour to make concessions to reach a mutually acceptable and sustainable living wage. Idris pledged to implement the agreed sum for Kebbi State workers, underscoring his commitment to supporting his constituents during challenging times.

This development comes amid reports that some Nigerian governors have allegedly declared their inability to pay the N62,000 minimum wage, regardless of any agreement reached by labour and the federal government.
