“I Am Happy Disu Is Taking Over; We Both Benefited From Bola Tinubu’s Mentorship,” Says Egbetokun

Kayode Egbetokun says he is pleased with the appointment of Tunji Disu as acting inspector-general of police, expressing confidence in his successor’s readiness to lead the Nigeria Police Force.

Egbetokun spoke on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja during Disu’s swearing-in and decoration ceremony. He resigned on Tuesday following a directive from the president.

“I am happy that he is the one taking over from me,” Egbetokun said, noting that Disu is conversant with the reform measures introduced during his tenure.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen operations, improve intelligence coordination, enhance inter-agency deployment, dismantle criminal syndicates, and reinforce intelligence response mechanisms as priorities that require continuity.

Egbetokun advised the new acting IGP to remain focused on his duties, adding that Disu had played central roles in the administration from the outset. Disu previously served as his principal staff officer, commissioner of police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, and assistant inspector-general in charge of the Special Protection Unit.

He also referenced Disu’s role in implementing the presidential directive withdrawing police officers from VIP protection, describing his execution of the assignment as effective.

Egbetokun said both men shared a professional history shaped by Tinubu’s mentorship during his tenure as governor of Lagos State. He recalled the president’s emphasis on succession planning and investing in potential successors, adding that he adopted that approach within the police force.

Egbetokun thanked the president for entrusting him with key responsibilities over the years, including his appointment as chief security officer during his time as Lagos governor and later as inspector-general of police.
