I Am a Northerner, I Started Learning Yoruba at 15 — NNPCL Boss Ojulari
Newly appointed Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari, has addressed public reactions surrounding his regional identity, asserting his deep roots in northern Nigeria. Speaking to journalists, Ojulari expressed surprise at claims questioning his northern origin, stating that he hails from Ilorin and was raised in Kaduna. “I am a child of the North,” he said. “I started learning Yoruba at 15. After Kaduna, I studied in Zaria. I am a northerner.”
Ojulari called for broad-based support, particularly from the northern region, to help him succeed in his role. “I need the support of the North to do this work well and bring development to the North and the whole of Nigeria. I need everyone’s prayer as this work is not what one person can do,” he said, urging unity and collective effort for national progress.
In response to recent reports of a strained relationship between NNPCL and the Dangote Group, Ojulari acknowledged past tensions but stressed that steps are being taken to mend the rift. “Dangote has made significant contributions, which deserve commendation,” he said. “We’ve held talks to resolve the conflict. Going forward, we’ll collaborate to ensure consistent fuel supply for Nigerians.” He further assured that future disagreements would be addressed through dialogue, emphasizing cooperation for the benefit of the country.
Ojulari also addressed concerns about the global drop in crude oil prices and its implications for Nigeria’s revenue. “This decline affects Nigeria’s budget since a major part of it relies on projected oil revenue,” he explained. However, he assured the public that NNPCL is working to reduce operational costs and improve earnings from oil and gas sales despite the price volatility.
On the issue of delayed reductions in domestic fuel prices despite falling global oil prices, Ojulari explained that local pricing reflects earlier, higher purchase costs by dealers. He noted that adjustments are expected as new supplies purchased at lower prices enter the market. “We expect local prices to eventually reflect the change,” he stated.
