Husband Allegedly Beats Wife to Death in Owerri Over ₦35,000 Dispute
Owerri, Imo State — A 29-year-old woman, Olumma Chizoba Lucy Akataobi, has reportedly died after an alleged domestic assault by her husband on Monday, February 2.
According to family members, Olumma was allegedly beaten by her husband, Kelechi Prince Okeke, a known drug seller, after requesting payment of N35,000 from a transaction he received. She reportedly lost her life around 11 p.m. in Owerri.
A video circulating online shows Olumma’s body lying on the floor. Voices can be heard in distress, including a man calling her name and a woman acknowledging her death.
Ezinne Onyedikachi Brenda Akataobi, Olumma’s sister, shared emotional appeals for justice on social media. She described the incident and alleged that her sister’s husband falsely claimed she had suddenly fallen ill after the assault.
“Olumma was not sick. She had gone to the market that day and even planned to return early the next morning to continue her business,” Ezinne said. “She provided for her children, bought their food, milk, and diapers. Yet over N35,000, her husband allegedly killed her.”
Ezinne emphasized that the family had repeatedly warned Kelechi against violence and welcomed Olumma back home whenever she considered leaving her husband, but she chose to stay with him.
She called on Nigerians to support the family in seeking justice, stating, “Domestic violence has killed my sister. Nigerians, please hear my voice and help us get justice.”
In an update, Ezinne noted that Olumma’s husband is reportedly in custody at the Homicide Department of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Owerri.
