“Hunger Pushed Me to Steal Yam on Two Occasions” – Man Tells Court

An unemployed man, Cletus Gandu, 40, confessed in court on Wednesday that he stole two tubers of yam because he was hungry. Gandu was charged by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) with criminal trespass and theft.

 

Appearing before the Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Gandu stated, “Hunger pushed me to steal yam on two occasions. I beg for leniency.”

 

Judge Michael Bawa reserved sentencing until August 6 after Gandu pleaded guilty. Bawa also ordered that Gandu be remanded in custody.

 

Earlier, NSCDC Prosecutor Mr. Marcus Audu informed the court that the complainant, Alice Daniel, reported the theft to the NSCDC office in Kafanchan on July 15. Audu alleged that Gandu had stolen the yams from Daniel’s farm in Zonkwa on two separate occasions.

 

Audu further noted that the alleged offenses violated sections 327 and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.
