Hunger Protests: US Embassy Issues Stay-at-Home Advisory to Staff, Warns of Possible Terror Attacks
The United States Mission in Nigeria has advised some of its staff to remain at home during the first two days of planned nationwide protests, citing potential security concerns.
Nigerians, particularly the youth, have called for demonstrations starting August 1 in response to skyrocketing living costs. The economic strain intensified after President Bola Tinubu ended the fuel subsidy and relaxed foreign exchange controls, leading to record inflation rates. In June, inflation hit 34.19%, with food prices soaring over 40.87%, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
Security agencies, including the police, military, and Department of State Services (DSS), have cautioned against Kenya-style protests. Despite politicians’ appeals to postpone the rallies, fearing a repeat of the EndSARS protests of October 2020, organizers remain determined.
In an urgent advisory on Wednesday night, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos instructed essential staff to work only on Thursday, August 1, and Friday, August 2, 2024. Non-essential staff were told to stay home to avoid disruptions.
The advisory detailed expected protest locations: Eagles Square in Abuja, and in Lagos, Alausa Park, Freedom Park, and Peace Park, with potential protests also at Nahco Bus Stop (Airport Road), Marwa Bus Stop (Lekki-Epe Expressway), and Ikeja “Under the Bridge” (Intersection of Obafemi Awolowo and Allen Avenue). The embassy warned that protests could also occur elsewhere in Nigeria, leading to roadblocks, checkpoints, traffic congestion, and physical confrontations.
The advisory also highlighted the risk of terror attacks, noting that terrorist groups might exploit the protests.
The embassy provided the following safety recommendations:
- Avoid protest areas
- Avoid crowds
- Exercise caution near large gatherings
- Monitor local media for updates
- Stay aware of your surroundings
- Keep a low profile
- Verify flight schedules with airlines
- Review personal security plans
- Keep cell phones charged
- Carry proper identification
The situation remains fluid, and the U.S. Mission urges vigilance and caution during this period.
