How My Girlfriend Masterminded My Attack and Robbed Me of N15.5m — Emeka Nwogu
In a shocking incident that unfolded on Valentine’s Day at Ago Palace Way, Lagos, a 35-year-old man, Emeka Nwogu, was attacked and robbed of N15.5 million by cultists allegedly recruited by his 25-year-old girlfriend and her younger brother. The attack, which resembled a Nollywood plot, left Nwogu traumatized and betrayed.
According to police investigations, Nwogu had spent Valentine’s night at a hotel with his girlfriend. The next day, they visited a new restaurant in the area. During the outing, the girlfriend claimed she needed to return to the hotel. On their way, however, she directed him past the bus stop near the hotel, insisting he shouldn’t worry. Moments after they alighted at a different location, they were ambushed by armed men.
The attackers, armed with guns and axes, dragged the couple to a secluded estate where they beat Nwogu and forced him to surrender passwords to his Bitcoin, Binance, and Trust Wallet accounts. They withdrew about $9,700 from his accounts and made away with his three mobile phones.
The couple later reported the incident to Ago Palace Police Station. But things took a dramatic turn when a security guard at the scene informed officers that one of the attackers was frequently seen with the girlfriend. Her suspicious behavior during the report further raised red flags. She was arrested on the spot and later confessed that she had masterminded the attack after discovering flirtatious WhatsApp chats between her boyfriend and other women. She admitted recruiting her younger brother and his cultist friends to carry out the assault.
The case was swiftly transferred to the Special Squad 1 under the Lagos State Commissioner of Police. While the girl’s brother fled before he could be apprehended, their father returned N3 million—allegedly part of his daughter’s share from the loot. Continued investigations led to the arrest of four gang members: Ogbuka Tochukwu (22), John Wisdom (25), Odora Michael (24), and Babatunde Ibrahim (20). They confessed to being members of the Aiye Confraternity. Recovered items included a locally-made gun, four cartridges, a battle axe, and N7.5 million in cash.
Emeka Nwogu expressed deep emotional distress over the betrayal. “I was shocked to discover the person I trusted for four years was behind this. I thank the CP’s squad for their excellent work in tracking them down.”
This squad previously gained recognition for dismantling a notorious kidnapping gang at the Ladipo Market in Lagos last year.
