How and Why You Should Eat Mangoes with the Skin – Expert

Clinical dietician Tunde Ajobo from University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has urged Nigerians to eat mangoes with their skin to maximize the fruit’s nutritional benefits. In an interview in Ibadan on Thursday, Ajobo explained that the skin of mangoes contains valuable nutrients and fiber that contribute to a balanced diet.

“Mangoes are best eaten with the skin, ensuring consumers get the full range of nutrients and fiber required for a healthy diet,” Ajobo said.

However, Ajobo warned against excessive mango consumption, which could lead to digestive issues. “While mangoes are beneficial, eating too much can cause diarrhea. It’s crucial to consume them in moderation,” he cautioned.

Ajobo also advised against eating unripe or overly ripe mangoes due to their high acid content, which could irritate the stomach. “The ideal mango is ripe and firm, making it easy to cut and eat with the skin,” he added. “Avoid mangoes where the epicarp has detached from the mesocarp.”

Ajobo recommended eating mangoes at intervals rather than consuming multiple fruits at once. “Ideally, you can start your day with a mango, but don’t eat more than one at a time,” he suggested. “Taking mangoes in moderation, preferably three a day, is the best approach.”

The dietician highlighted mangoes’ nutritional profile, emphasizing their carotene content, which is a source of vitamin A, beneficial for good eyesight. He also noted that mangoes contain about 80% water, contributing to hydration, and they provide essential proteins and vitamin C.

For those with gardens, Ajobo recommended planting mango trees to enjoy the fruit’s benefits and create additional income. “Mango trees can provide shelter and yield fruit for many years, offering a consistent source of food and income,” he noted.

Following these guidelines, Nigerians can enjoy the health benefits of mangoes while avoiding potential digestive issues caused by overconsumption.
