How a Nigerian Prophetess’ 2020 Prophecy Foretold Trump’s Criticism of Nigeria Over Religious Violence
A prophecy from 2020 by Nigerian cleric Prophetess Maudlyn Adaeze Ekewueme has drawn renewed attention amid rising tensions over US-Nigeria relations. In her message, Ekewueme predicted that Donald Trump would “swing into action to protect the Christian faith in two West African countries — Nigeria and another.” At the time, the statement was largely dismissed as a spiritual claim with little real-world significance, but it now resonates in light of Trump’s recent remarks on Nigeria.
In late October 2025, Trump accused the Nigerian government of allowing what he called a “Christian genocide,” pointing to recurring violence in the Middle Belt and northern regions. He indicated that Nigeria could be placed back on the US Countries of Particular Concern (CPC) list and suggested that sanctions or aid suspension might follow if the situation did not improve. Delivered at a conservative faith summit in Florida, Trump’s remarks have reignited global debate over Nigeria’s handling of religious violence, drawing responses from human rights groups, faith leaders, and advocacy organizations.
The Nigerian government quickly pushed back. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale, dismissed the allegations as a mischaracterization. He emphasized that Nigeria guarantees religious freedom under the constitution and highlighted efforts to engage both Christian and Muslim leaders. Tinubu cited balanced federal appointments, interfaith consultations, and support for Christian events as evidence of inclusive governance.
Trump’s statements also highlighted divisions within Nigeria’s religious community. The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) criticized the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for what it called a failure to acknowledge the government’s inclusive policies, accusing the group of amplifying Western narratives of Christian persecution. CAN responded by framing its advocacy as humanitarian rather than political, stressing that victims of religious violence from all faiths deserve protection and justice.
