How a Naval Officer Shot Colleague to Death
A dispute between two Nigerian naval officers deployed in Zamfara State tragically escalated on Friday, leading one officer to fatally shoot his colleague in Dansadau, Maru Local Government Area. Both men were assigned to Operation Sheto Yanma, a security mission aimed at addressing escalating regional violence.
Reports indicate that the altercation between the officers intensified, culminating in one officer, identified as Leading Seaman Akila A., allegedly firing at his fellow officer at close range. The incident reportedly occurred around 3:12 a.m., after which Akila was quickly apprehended, disarmed, and detained.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed the shooting and stated that an investigation has been launched to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident. “The case will be escalated to a standing court-martial,” Buba said, ensuring that standard procedures will be followed for accountability.
The military has begun the process of notifying the family of the deceased, whose name remains undisclosed for privacy. General Buba urged the media to report with caution, emphasizing sensitivity towards the grieving family during this period.
