House of Representatives Breaks Silence on Alleged Assault Incident Involving Member Alex Ikwechegh
The House of Representatives has officially responded to allegations involving Alex Ikwechegh, the representative for Aba North/South Federal Constituency in Abia State, following a viral video showing the lawmaker in a confrontation with a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.
The video, which has circulated widely on social media, appears to depict Ikwechegh engaging in a heated exchange with Abuwatseya, during which he allegedly made threatening remarks, asserting that not even the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, could intervene on behalf of the driver. The incident has sparked public outrage, with numerous Nigerians calling for justice and transparency in handling the matter.
In response, Rotimi Akin Rotimi, Jr., spokesperson for the House of Representatives, issued a formal statement on Monday evening, assuring the public that the incident is under investigation. “The House of Representatives is closely monitoring media reports concerning an alleged incident involving Rep. Alex Ikwechegh (APGA, Abia). These reports, which have received significant media attention, outline accusations of a physical altercation with an e-hailing driver, Citizen Stephen Abuwatseya, and alleged use of threatening language,” he said.
Emphasizing the House’s commitment to ethical standards, Rotimi added, “The 10th Assembly of the House of Representatives holds these allegations in high regard. As representatives, we are bound by standards of accountability and ethical conduct in both our official roles and private lives. Any behavior falling short of these expectations is treated with utmost seriousness.”
Rotimi further clarified that the matter has been referred to the Nigeria Police for an impartial investigation, urging the public to allow due process to take its course. The statement also welcomed continued public engagement, encouraging individuals to share their perspectives or relevant information by email at akintunde.rotimi@nass.gov.ng or akinrotimi@gmail.com.
The House pledged to maintain transparency and ethical conduct as it monitors developments in the case. Further updates are anticipated as the investigation unfolds, ensuring that the public remains informed.
