Well-Armed Terrorists Blocking Federal Government from Restoring Power in Northern States – Deputy Senate President

In an address to the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin revealed that heavily armed terrorists have occupied strategic locations around damaged power transmission cables, hindering repairs and prolonging a power outage affecting much of Northern Nigeria. The blackout, which has persisted for over a week, has left around 17 of the region’s 19 states without electricity.

The damage, attributed to vandalism along the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s (TCN) Shiroro-Mando line, highlights ongoing security challenges in the north. According to Mr. Jibrin, these locations have become strongholds for armed groups who regularly target local communities with violence, kidnapping, and other forms of aggression.

The deputy senate president assured his colleagues that coordinated efforts to restore electricity are underway. Mr. Jibrin stated he has been in close communication with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, as well as the TCN, to mobilize resources and organize a safe approach to restoring power.

“Security agencies are preparing to strike the area and eliminate the threat,” Jibrin said. “The National Security Adviser is fully engaged, and plans are in place to address the threat directly, ensuring the safety of those conducting the repairs.”

The restoration of power infrastructure has been delayed due to the substantial presence and firepower of these militant groups. Mr. Jibrin noted that disclosing further operational details could compromise the security mission, adding, “It’s an arrangement that cannot be shared publicly because doing so would endanger the safety of security forces and TCN personnel.”

Recent statements by Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu indicate the government is considering solar power plants as a long-term solution for Northern Nigeria’s energy needs. Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to expedite efforts to eliminate obstacles in restoring the damaged power line.
