Hotel Owner, Military Personnel Accused of Torturing Staff to Death Over Alleged Phone Theft in Imo
A hotel owner and military personnel stand accused of the fatal torture of Ebuka Nwaneri, a staff member, over suspicions of a missing phone in the Umulogho community of Obowo LGA, Imo state.
Nwaneri, reportedly accused of stealing a phone belonging to a military guest at the establishment, was subjected to torture and confined in the hotel’s powerhouse, where he tragically met his demise.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with local youths demanding justice for Nwaneri’s untimely death. Threats to dismantle the hotel have been issued if those responsible are not swiftly brought to justice.
In response, Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the Imo police, assured the public that the matter is under thorough investigation. He stated, “CP Aboki Danjuma has directed the command’s complaint response unit (CRU) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into this allegation and ensure that justice is served.”
Furthermore, Okoye urged the victim or witnesses to come forward and assist in identifying the alleged perpetrators, emphasizing the police force’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Amidst the unrest, several youths have been apprehended during protests. Chinagorom Cyriacus, president of the Umulogho Youth Assembly, urged calm among the community, pledging to secure the release of those detained.
Cyriacus condemned the heinous act and vowed to pursue justice for Nwaneri, urging the community to refrain from vigilantism and allow the authorities to address the situation.
The Umulogho community, reeling from the tragedy, extends condolences to the Nwaneri family and reassures them of their dedication to securing justice for their late kin.
